Account & Data Deletion

Delete your MarkWise account

This page explains how to request deletion of your MarkWise account and personal data, whether or not you still have the app installed.

Option 1: Delete your account from within the app

The fastest way, if you still have MarkWise installed:

  1. Open the MarkWise app and sign in.
  2. Go to the Account tab (Settings).
  3. Scroll to the bottom and tap Delete account.
  4. Confirm the deletion when prompted.

This immediately and permanently removes your login credentials (email and password) from MarkWise — you will no longer be able to sign in.

Option 2: Request deletion without the app

If you no longer have the app installed, or can't sign in, you can request the same deletion by contacting us directly:

  • Use our Contact page and select “Technical Support,” or
  • Email us with the subject line “Account deletion request,” using the address registered to your MarkWise account so we can verify it's you.

We process manual deletion requests within a reasonable time after verifying your identity, typically within 30 days.

What gets deleted, and what's retained

Deleted immediately: your login credentials (password hash and account email), and any passkeys/biometric credentials registered to your account. After deletion you can no longer sign in to MarkWise, and biometric check-in tied to your old account stops working.

Retained: your name, admission number (students) or staff number (lecturers), course/institution affiliation, and your attendance history. These are kept because they form part of your institution's academic record, which your institution — not MarkWise — is responsible for retaining under its own academic record-keeping obligations. This mirrors how a university keeps a paper attendance register even after a student graduates or a staff member leaves.

There is no fixed retention period for this institutional data — it is retained for as long as your institution's own policies require. If you want records fully purged from your institution's history rather than just your MarkWise login removed, that request needs to go to your institution's MarkWise administrator, since they own that academic record, not MarkWise directly.
